"Oregon
City woman details abortion, relationship with Mike Erickson:
Now a "pro-life" congressional candidate, he gave her $300 and took her
to the clinic in Northeast Portland, Tawnya says." ... "An Oregon City
[Oregon] woman who dated [Republican] congressional candidate Mike Erickson
seven years ago said she asked him directly whether he wanted to have a
baby. He shook his head no, she said, and paid for her abortion." ... "In
interviews with The Oregonian, the woman said she met Erickson in September
2000, and she had the abortion in January 2001. They saw each other afterward,
she said, even going on a trip to Mexico in March, before the relationship
ended. She spoke on the condition that only her first name, Tawnya, be
used." ... "Her story is backed up by medical and other records, and the
accounts of two friends, one of whom was with her at the abortion. Their
story conflicts directly with Erickson's version." ... "He agrees that
he gave Tawnya $300 for medical help, and a ride to a doctor's office near
Lloyd Center [in Portland, Oregon], but said he didn't know she was pregnant
or planned to get an abortion. He said he doesn't think he saw her again
after that day." ... "Erickson, a Lake Oswego [Oregon] businessman, is
the Republican candidate for the 5th Congressional District and is running
on a "pro-life" platform. The charge that he provided money to Tawnya nearly
derailed his campaign for the May 20 primary and could hobble his chances
in the [2008 Election November] Nov. 4 general election against state [Oregon
Democratic Senator] Sen. Kurt Schrader, D[Democratic]-Canby [Oregon]."
... "Erickson has campaigned on a strict anti-abortion platform that favors
abstinence education and adoption over abortion." (1, 2,

- "U.S.
home prices fall 10.7% in January, Seattle's drop 1.3%."
... "U.S. [United States] home prices fell 10.7 percent in January from
the same month last year, according to the Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller
home-price index of 20 cities, which saw the steepest decline in the two-decade
history of the index." ... "Seattle[Washington]-area home prices were among
the decliners, although the annual drop was a slight 1.3 percent. Only
Portland, Ore. [Oregon], posted a smaller annual decline, 0.5 percent."
... "Worst hit were Las Vegas [Nevada] and Miami [Florida], both reporting
19.3 percent drops, as the regions are still paying the price for rampant
speculation and overbuilding during the boom years. Those cities and 14
others — including Phoenix [Arizona], San Diego [California] and Detroit
[Michigan] — posted record lows." ... "Only Charlotte, N.C. [North Carolina],
squeaked by as a gainer in the Case-Shiller index, with a 1.8 percent increase
in January compared with a year earlier." -By Vinnee

- "Smith
backs Cheney on salmon kill controversy." ... "[Oregon
Republican Senator] Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore. [Republican-Oregon], is siding
with [Republican] Vice President Dick Cheney over a massive fish kill on
the Klamath River in 2002, saying there is no evidence it was caused by
water diversions to farmers." [The Klamath River runs through Oregon and
California] ... "Smith also defended Cheney's role in intervening with
federal officials to help farmers in the Klamath Basin and cast doubt that
the salmon die-off caused sharp commercial costal [coastal] fishing restrictions."
... "The House Natural Resources Committee is investigating whether Cheney
exerted improper political influence to override scientifically based management
of the water resources." ... "Environmentalists, often at odds with Smith,
say his stance contradicts a study by the California Department of Fish
and Game, which found that the water diversions played a key role in the
deaths of some 77,000 salmon." ... "The California Fish and Game report
cited several factors leading to the fish kill, the largest in recorded
West Coast history." ... "There were larger-than-normal salmon returns,
warm water and low river flows that combined to crowd the fish, hastening
the spread of disease." ... "The report concluded that, "River flow and
the volume of water in the fish-kill area were atypically low," and that
the river flow was the only factor controlled by humans." ... ""It's stretching
credibility to claim that the flow management decisions by the [Republican
President] Bush administration in 2002 had nothing to do with the low flows
in the Klamath River," said Steve Pedery of Oregon Wild, a Portland-based
environmental group." -AP

blasts its Oregon dam to make way for fish." ...
"The largest dam removal in the Pacific Northwest in 40 years began on
Tuesday with blasts of 4,000 pounds of explosives, the dam's owner, Portland
General Electric, said." ... "The Marmot Dam on the Sandy River about 40
miles east of Portland [Oregon] was built almost 100 years ago along with
the nearby 16-foot-high Little Sandy Dam, which will be destroyed next
summer, the utility said." ... "Removing the two dams will allow the Sandy
to flow freely from Mt. Hood to the Columbia River." ... "When the dams
were built, they ruined a natural fish run that biologists say the fish
will rediscover and repopulate once the dams are removed, [Portland General
Electric spokesman Mark] Fryburg said." (1, 2)

Stations Blur The Line Between News And Ads." ...
"Recently on Oregon Considered, we brought you a story about weekly
medical reports on Portland's CBS affiliate, KOIN-TV. Providence Health
Systems sponsors the health segments, and nearly all of them feature medical
experts from Providence. That kind of commercialism is fairly common in
local television stations, according to a new study by the University of
Oregon's School of Journalism. Colin Fogarty spoke with a lead researcher
in the study." ... "Jim Upshaw: "Stealth advertisements are, of course,
commercial messages intended to promote in some fashion a product or service
that are clothed in some other garment than the normal commercial."" ...

article on commercialism in TV newscasts is published in the June edition
of the journal of Electronic News." -By Colin Fogarty

Furious Over Tactic: Catholics express shock over
lawyer's arguments that a woman who sued Portland archdiocese for child
support should have used birth control." ... "In 1994, then-Archbishop
of Portland William Levada offered a simple answer for why the archdiocese
shouldn't have been ordered to pay the costs of raising a child fathered
by a church worker at a Portland, Ore., parish." ... "In her relationship
with Arturo Uribe, then a seminarian and now a Whittier priest, the child's
mother had engaged "in unprotected intercourse … when [she] should have
known that could result in pregnancy," the church maintained in its answer
to the lawsuit." ... "The former archbishop is now chief guardian of Catholic
doctrine worldwide. The archbishop's new post as prefect of the Vatican's
Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith was last held by Cardinal Joseph

court voids same-sex marriage licenses: County had
no authority to allow such unions, ruling says." ... "The Oregon Supreme
Court on Thursday nullified nearly 3,000 marriage licenses issued to same-sex
couples by Multnomah County a year ago, saying a single county couldn't
take such action on its own." ... "Multnomah County, which includes much
of Portland and is the state's most populous county, began issuing marriages
to gay couples last April, arguing that not doing so violated the state
Constitution. A judge ordered the practice to cease about six weeks later,
but not before nearly 3,000 same-sex couples had wed."
