trial opens with Vitter on list: Attorney says senator
will invoke Fifth Amendment if questioned." ... "The woman accused of being
the "D.C. Madam" plans to call [Louisiana Republican Senator] Sen. David
Vitter, R-La. [Republican-Louisiana], as a defense witness, her attorney
said in court Monday as the high-profile racketeering and money-laundering
trial got under way." ... "Vitter's name is among those listed as potential
witnesses at the outset of the trial of Deborah Jeane Palfrey, 52, who
ran a $250-per-hour escort service that the government says was a front
for prostitution. Palfrey has said her business was a legitimate escort
service and her employees signed contracts stating that they would not
do anything illegal." ... "Vitter has not been charged. The senator's cell
phone number appears six times in the phone records of Palfrey's service,
Pamela Martin & Associates, between 1999 and 2001 when he was a member
of the House of Representatives." ... "His attorney asked U.S. [United
States] District Judge James Robertson last week to quash the subpoena,
saying that his client would refuse to answer questions citing his Fifth
Amendment right against self-incrimination, which would not help Palfrey's
case. Robertson refused to void the subpoena." ... ""I'd guess the Fifth
Amendment response would not play well at all, and would draw a response
of 'What has he got to hide?' from many people," said Michael Johnston,
a political scientist from Colgate University who has written about the
public's perception of corruption." ... "Palfrey's trial is expected to
last up to four weeks and feature testimony from 14 of the more than 100
escorts who worked for Pamela Martin & Associates between 1993 and
2006. Given immunity, they are expected to say that they performed sex
acts for money with Palfrey's knowledge and sent her half the proceeds
from each encounter." (1, 2)

New Orleans [Louisiana] prostitute who has said [Republican Louisiana Senator]
David Vitter was a regular customer in 1999 says the soon-to-be congressman
and U.S. senator was sometimes stressed during their meetings, complaining
about "these damn politicians" trying to derail his career." ... "She said

Election - "House
G.O.P.'s History Could Repeat in Senate." ... "The
embarrassing [Idaho Republican Senator] Larry Craig episode combined sex
and the justice system – always a potent political mix and one reason the
Republican leadership moved so swiftly to jettison Mr. Craig." ... "Already,
Mr. Craig is the star of a Web
video from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee featuring a
lineup of recent Republican scandals being shown to the tune of the “Bad
Boys” theme song from the television show “Cops.” It seeks to ridicule
Republican claims to hold the moral high ground." ... "Mr. Craig’s guilty
plea to a sexually related disorderly conduct charge only served to remind
people about Mr. [Louisiana Republican Senator] Vitter’s [alleged prostitution]
case – and prompt accusations of a double standard since Republicans took
no action against the Louisiana lawmaker for his heterosexual incident
compared to Mr. Craig’s homosexual one." ... "Republicans can point to

[Alaska Republican Senator Ted] Stevens not to mention those of former

Moves to Block Senate Ethics Panel Complaint." ...
"Lawyers for [Idaho Republican] Senator Larry E. Craig of Idaho delivered
a letter to the Senate ethics committee today asking the committee to reject
a complaint relating to his guilty plea in an airport sex sting operation."
... "Mr. Craig stunned Washington late yesterday with an announcement through
his spokesman that he may return to the Senate despite announcing Saturday
“my intent to resign from the Senate effective September 30.”" ... "A nonprofit
group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington [DC], also
said it filed a complaint last week against Mr. Craig. In that filing,
Melanie Sloan, the group’s executive director, said the Senate ethics rules
broadly cover “improper conduct which may reflect upon the Senate.”" ...

Republican of Alaska, who is under criminal investigation for financial
dealings, and [Senator] David Vitter, Republican of Louisiana, whose name

Election - "Craig
Faces Growing Republican Pressure to Resign (Update3)."
... "Republican lawmakers and Christian groups are increasing pressure
on [Republican] Idaho Senator Larry Craig to resign, saying he can't resurrect
his political career after pleading guilty to disorderly conduct in connection
with a restroom incident." ... "Three Republicans in Congress yesterday
demanded Craig resign and party leaders in the Senate yesterday forced
him to relinquish his committee leadership posts." ... "Craig, 62, was
deciding whether to seek re-election [in 2008] before his arrest, and since
has become the target of jokes, putting his immediate political future
in doubt, said Whit Ayres, a Republican pollster and strategist. In defending
himself, Craig denied being gay." ... "Should Craig resign, [Republican]
Idaho Governor Butch Otter would appoint someone to fill the seat until
the 2008 election." ... "Still, Craig's troubles add to a list of Republican
embarrassments, including Louisiana [Republican] Senator David Vitter's
public apology after his phone number was linked to a Washington escort
service, and Alaska [Republican] Senator Ted Stevens's acknowledgement
that he is under an FBI corruption probe." -By Julianna

Democratic leader in the Senate said Tuesday the call-girl scandal that
has engulfed [Louisiana Republican Senator] Sen. David Vitter, R-La., should

into the escort service that Vitter acknowledged calling." ... "[Nevada

by his public admission that his number appeared on the phone records of

prostitutes in Louisiana. I don't know if that's breaking the law or not.

Vitter shadow, Jindal launches bid for governor."
... "Formally kicking off his campaign for [Louisiana] governor, Republican
U.S. Rep. [Louisiana Republican Representative Piyush] Bobby Jindal cast
aside any talk Monday of his congressional colleague and previously outspoken
supporter, [Louisiana Republican Senator] U.S. Sen. David Vitter, who is
enmeshed in a sex scandal." ... "Vitter, R-Metairie, had been vociferous
in his backing of Jindal for this fall's election for governor and was
expected to be a companion to Jindal on the campaign trail, helping to
drum up support." ... "But that was before Vitter last week acknowledged
a past "serious sin" involving an escort service in Washington that federal
prosecutors claim was a prostitution ring. Vitter has stayed out of the
public eye since that statement, and Jindal wouldn't talk of Vitter or
the scandal's effect on his campaign." -AP
