concedes defeat, sealing transfer of Senate." ...

the Senate in Democratic hands for the first time since 2003 and giving
the Democrats a sweep of both houses — a seismic shift in the Washington
political climate." ... "Montana Republican Sen. Conrad Burns conceded
earlier today in his reelection bid after his Democratic challenger, Jon
Tester, claimed victory Wednesday." ... "Coupled with Allen's defeat, those

Pleads Guilty to Corruption Charges: Lawmaker's Conviction
Is 8th in Abramoff Probe." ... "[Ohio Republican Bob] Ney is the eighth
person convicted in the continuing federal investigation into Abramoff's
activities. A federal task force that includes a dozen Justice Department
prosecutors is investigating Abramoff's dealings with other congressional
offices, including those of Sen. Conrad Burns (R-Mont. [Republican-Montana])
and Rep. John T. Doolittle (R-Calif. [Republican-California]), according
to lawyers and witnesses involved in the probe." ... "The Ohio Republican
had been a target of the investigation for a year and came under increasing
pressure -- first in January with Abramoff's guilty plea and agreement
to cooperate in the investigation, then with the guilty plea in May of
his former aide Neil G. Volz, who admitted conspiring to corruptly influence
the congressman and others. Ney admitted encouraging Volz to violate the
one-year ban on lobbying by former staffers." ... "Earlier this year, Ney's
committee passed ethics legislation to strip convicted lawmakers of their
pensions, but the bill died in the House." -By Susan

Senator Does It Again: Conrad Burns: Terrorists Drive
Taxis By Day, "Kill At Night"." ... "[Montana] Republican Sen. Conrad Burns,
whose recent comments have stirred controversy, says the United States
is up against a faceless enemy of terrorists who "drive taxi cabs in the
daytime and kill at night."" ... "He has drawn criticism in recent weeks
for calling his house painter a "nice little Guatemalan man" during a June
speech. Burns, whose [2006] re-election campaign is pressing for tighter
immigration controls, also suggested that the man might be an illegal immigrant.
The campaign later said the worker is legal." ... "Burns, 71, also had
to apologize after confronting members of a firefighting team at the Billings
[Montana] airport and telling them they had done a "piss-poor job," according
to a state report. In July, the Hotshot crew had traveled 2,000 miles from
Staunton, Va., to help dig fire lines for about a week around a 143-square-mile
wildfire east of Billings." -AP

Met Abramoff Team, Collected $12,000 in Donations While Helping Lobbying
Client." ... "[Montana Republican Senator] Sen. Conrad Burns and his staff
met Jack Abramoff's lobbying team on at least eight occasions and collected
$12,000 in donations around the time that the lawmaker took legislative
action favorable to Abramoff's clients in the Northern Mariana Islands,
records show." ... "The 2001 donations to Burns, a Montana Republican,
included money directly from Abramoff and a key garment company executive
in the Pacific islands who was part of the coalition paying Abramoff's
firm to fend off stronger U.S. [worker] regulations on the islands." ...
"In addition, two Burns staffers had accepted a trip arranged by Abramoff
to attend the Super Bowl in Florida earlier that year." ... "At the time,

appropriations subcommittee that controlled spending for the Interior Department,
which regulates U.S. territories including the islands." ... "Burns, who
is up for re-election to a fourth term in 2006, received about $150,000
in donations from Abramoff, his firm and his clients between 2001 and 2004."

Election - "Tribal
Grant Is Being Questioned: Senator Who Had Dealings
With Lobbyist Abramoff Pushed for Award." ... "A $3 million grant from
a federal program intended for impoverished Indian tribal schools went
to one of the richest tribes in the country under pressure from Sen. Conrad
Burns (R-Mont. [Republican-Montana]), who oversees the budget of the Bureau
of Indian Affairs." ... "The tribe that last year received the money for
a new school, the Saginaw Chippewas of Michigan, was at the time a client
of Jack Abramoff, a prominent Republican lobbyist whose practices are the
subject of multiple federal investigations. Abramoff, his associates and
his wealthy tribal clients have been an important source of Burns's campaign
funds, providing 42 percent of the contributions to his "soft-money" political
action committee from 2000 to 2002, according to federal election records."
... "Burns pressed for the appropriation over the objections of Interior
officials, who said that the grant was not intended for such a purpose."
... "The Saginaws, who operate a casino northwest of Detroit, are well-to-do,
with each member of the tribe receiving $70,000 a year from gambling profits.
The tribe was given authorization for $3 million to build a new school
on the reservation under a program created to help impoverished tribes
make repairs to dilapidated school buildings." ... "As chairman of the
Interior Appropriations subcommittee, Burns controls funding for the Bureau
of Indian Affairs and is in a key position for tribes seeking special projects.
His political action and campaign committees have received $137,000 from
Abramoff" (1, 2)
