- "Robertson
endorses Giuliani; Brownback backs McCain: Moves
underscore divided Christian conservative vote." ... "[2008 Election Republican
Presidential Candidate] Rudy Giuliani, whose two divorces and proabortion-rights
views have alienated many Christian conservatives, yesterday captured the
endorsement of the [Reverend] Rev. Pat Robertson, a prominent televangelist
who said the former New York [City, New York] mayor would be the best candidate
to counter the "blood lust of Islamic terrorists."" ... "Robertson's support
helps Giuliani deflect criticism from the Republican Party's right wing,
which sees him as too liberal on social issues." ... "Robertson, who sought
the GOP nomination in 1988, has drawn controversy for his remarks about
Islam. On his Christian Broadcasting Network show, "The 700 Club," Robertson
has warned of a looming "holy war" between Muslims and Christians and called
Islam "satanic."" ... "After the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Robertson
was criticized for suggesting that God allowed the attacks to happen because
of the country's tolerance of abortion and homosexuality." -By

to endorse McCain." ... "[Republican Representative]
Sam Brownback, a Kansas conservative and favorite of evangelical Christians,
will endorse his former [2008 Election] Republican presidential rival John
McCain, GOP officials said Wednesday." ... "The nod could provide a much-needed
boost, particularly in Iowa, for the Arizona senator and one-time presumed
GOP front-runner whose bid faltered and who now is looking for a comeback."
... "Republican officials said Brownback will announce his support for
McCain later Wednesday in Dubuque, Iowa, and then travel with the candidate
to campaign in two other cities in the state." -By

- "Senate
Republicans Block Vote on Alberto Gonzales (Update1)."
... "A resolution to express ``no confidence'' in Alberto Gonzales, [Republican]
President George W. Bush's embattled attorney general, was blocked by U.S.
Senate Republicans who called it a meaningless gesture." ... "Congressional
Democrats are investigating whether eight U.S. attorneys were dismissed
last year because of political pressure from the president's staff. The
Justice Department has given conflicting accounts of why the prosecutors
were fired. Lawmakers of both parties challenged Gonzales's candor when
he testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about the dismissals
on April 19." ... "Bush, traveling in Bulgaria today, called the vote ``meaningless''
because it won't determine ``who serves in my government. There's been
no wrongdoing.''" ... "The 53 voting to end debate included 45 Democrats,
seven Republicans and independent Bernard Sanders of Vermont. Those voting
not to shut off debate included 37 Republicans and independent Joseph Lieberman
of Connecticut." ... "New York [Democratic] Senator Hillary Clinton, a
Democratic presidential candidate, voted to end debate. Other senators
who are [2008 election] presidential candidates didn't vote, including
Democrats Joseph Biden of Delaware, Christopher Dodd of Connecticut and
Barack Obama of Illinois and Republicans Sam Brownback of Kansas and John
McCain of Arizona. " -By James Rowley

- "Majority
of Republicans Doubt Theory of Evolution: More Americans
accept theory of creationism than evolution." ... "The majority of Republicans
in the United States do not believe the theory of evolution is true and
do not believe that humans evolved over millions of years from less advanced
forms of life. This suggests that when three Republican presidential candidates
at a May debate stated they did not believe in evolution, they were generally
in sync with the bulk of the rank-and-file Republicans whose nomination
they are seeking to obtain." ... "Independents and Democrats are more likely
than Republicans to believe in the theory of evolution. But even among
non-Republicans there appears to be a significant minority who doubt that
evolution adequately explains where humans came from." ... "The data from
several recent Gallup studies suggest that Americans' religious behavior
is highly correlated with beliefs about evolution." ... "Although many
scientists accept evolution as the best theoretical explanation for diversity
in forms of life on Earth, the issue of its validity has risen again as
an important issue in the current 2008 presidential campaign. Two recent
Republican debates have included questions to the candidates about evolution.
Three candidates -- Sam Brownback, Mike Huckabee, and Tom Tancredo -- indicated
in response to a question during the May 3 debate that they did not believe
in the theory of evolution, although they have attempted to clarify their
positions in the weeks since." -By Frank Newport

marriage ban defeated in Senate vote: Bush rebuffed;
ban backers still hopeful, citing a few new votes in favor." ... "The Senate
on Wednesday rejected a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage, dealing
a defeat to President Bush and Republicans who hope to use the measure
to energize conservative voters on Election Day [2008]." ... "“We were
hoping to get over 50 percent, but that didn’t happen today,” said [Louisiana
Republican Senator] Sen. David Vitter, R-La., one of the amendment’s supporters."
... "“We’re not going to stop until marriage between a man and a woman
is protected,” said [Kansas Republican Senator] Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan."
... "Democrats said the debate was a divisive political ploy. “The Republican
leadership is asking us to spend time writing bigotry into the Constitution,”
said Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, which legalized gay marriage
in 2003." ... "“A vote for it is a vote against civil unions, against domestic
partnership, against all other efforts for states to treat gays and lesbians
fairly under the law.”" (1, 2)
