The dramatic spread of the West Nile virus across the U.S. has been graphically documented by CNN.com.

It has managed to cover over half of the contiguous United States since the first known outbreak in New York City in 1999.  That outbreak killed seven people and hospitalized 55.

The virus spreads from mosquitos to migrating birds and back to mosquitos.
