Election - "McCain's
YouTube Problem Just Became a Nightmare." [2008 Election
Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain]
[John
McCain]
[YouTube
Video]
"According
to Cliff Schecter, author of The
Real McCain: Why Conservatives Don't Trust Him And Why Independents Shouldn't:
"It is dangerous for a democracy when a presidential candidate can lie
with impunity, change positions on a whim, and physically and verbally
threaten others and virtually none of it is reported by a besotted media
eagerly awaiting the next moment when he might slap their backs in friendship."

Election - "Childers
victory gives Dems a third straight takeover." ...
"Democrat Travis Childers won Tuesday’s Mississippi special election runoff
for [Mississippi Republican Senator] Sen. Roger Wicker’s (R [Republican])
former House seat, handing Democrats the biggest of their three special
election takeovers this cycle and sending a listless GOP [GOP=Grand Old
Party=Republican] further into a state of disarray." ... "Childers led
GOP candidate Greg Davis 53-47 with more than 90 percent of precincts reporting.
Turnout increased substantially over the 67,000 voters who cast ballots
in the April 22 open special election, with more than 100,000 voting in
the runoff." ... "Childers, who beat Davis 49-46 three weeks ago but came
up just shy of a race-ending majority, joins new Democratic [Illinois Representative]
Reps. Bill Foster (Ill. [Illinois]) and [Louisiana Democratic Representative]
Don Cazayoux (La. [Louisiana]) to give Democrats a trifecta of upsets in
conservative House districts over the last two months." ... "Wicker’s former
district voted 62 percent for [Republican] President Bush in 2004 and,
by that measure, is one of the most conservative seats Democrats have taken
from the GOP over the last 18 months, including the 2006 election." ...
"Davis and Childers will square off again in November [2008 Election],
as they have already been elected their parties’ general election nominees."

Madam Found Dead of Apparent Suicide." ... "Florida
police are investigating the apparent suicide of the so-called D.C. Madam,
who was found dead in the Florida mobile home of the madam's mother Thursday."
... "The madam, Deborah Jeane Palfrey, was recently convicted on federal
charges stemming from operating a prostitution service in the Washington,
D.C. area with a number of high-profile clients. She was scheduled to be
sentenced July 24." ... "Several well-known men were reportedly clients
of her service, including former U.S. [United States] Agency for International
Development chief Randall Tobias and [Louisiana Republican Senator] Sen.
David Vitter, R-La[Republican-Louisiana]. Neither man was among the clients
called to testify at Palfrey's trial." (1, 2)

Election - "McCain
opposes equal pay bill in Senate." ... "Republican
[2008 Election Presidential Candidate and Arizona] Sen. John McCain, campaigning
through poverty-stricken cities and towns, said Wednesday he opposes a
Senate bill that seeks equal pay for women because it would lead to more
lawsuits." ... "Senate Republicans killed the bill Wednesday night on a
56-42 vote that denied the measure the 60 votes needed to advance it to
full debate and a vote. [Nevada Democratic Representative and] Majority
Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.[Democratic-Nevada], had delayed the vote to give
McCain's Democratic rivals, [2008 Election Democratic Presidential Candidate
and Senators of New York and Illinois] Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and
Barack Obama, time to return to Washington to support the measure, which
would make it easier for women to sue their employers for pay discrimination."
... "McCain skipped the vote to campaign in New Orleans [Louisiana]." ...
""Senator McCain has yet again fallen in line with President Bush while
middle-class families are falling by the wayside," Clinton said in a statement
following the vote. "Women are earning less, but Senator McCain is offering
more of the same."" ... "Democratic National Committee spokeswoman Karen
Finney said: "At a time when American families are struggling to keep their
homes and jobs while paying more for everything from gasoline to groceries,
how on Earth would anyone who thinks they can lead our country also think
it's acceptable to oppose equal pay for America's mothers, wives and daughters?""

Madam Trial: Powerful Men Won't Have to Testify?"
... "At least three powerful men, including [Louisiana Republican Senator]
Sen. David Vitter, D-La.[sic. correction: Republican-Louisiana], may not
have to testify about their involvement with a Washington, D.C. escort
service." ... "The attorney for accused "D.C. Madam" Deborah Jeane Palfrey
said he would rest his case today without calling any further witnesses,
the Associated Press reported." ... "Earlier in the case, Burton had indicated
he might call to the stand Vitter, former senior State Department official
Randall Tobias, and military strategist Harlan Ullman -- all men whose
numbers appeared on phone records of Palfrey's business. None have been
called." -By Justin Rood

- Virgin
Islands - "Housing
chief ignored looming crisis." ... "In late 2006,
as economists warned of an imminent housing-market collapse, [Republican
President Bush's] housing Secretary Alphonso Jackson repeatedly insisted
that the mounting wave of mortgage failures was a short-term "correction.""
... "He pushed for legislation that would make it easier for federally
backed lenders to make loans to risky borrowers. He issued a rule that
was criticized by law enforcement because it could increase the difficulty
of detecting and proving mortgage fraud." ... "As Jackson leaves office
this week, much of the attention on his tenure has been focused on investigations
into whether his agency directed housing contracts to friends and political
allies. But critics say an equally significant legacy of his four years
as the top housing officer was gross inattention to the looming housing
crisis." ... "They contend that Jackson ignored warnings from within his
agency, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, whose inspector
general told Congress that some of the secretary's efforts were "ill-advised
policy" and likely to put more families at risk." ... "During Jackson's
tenure, foreclosures for loans insured by HUD's Federal Housing Administration
(FHA) have risen and default rates have hit a record high." ... "A federal
grand jury is investigating whether he lied to Congress about his involvement
in contracts and whether he steered millions of dollars in government work
at the Virgin Islands and New Orleans [Louisiana] housing authorities to
friends." -By Carol D. Leonnig contributed to by Julie

Republican Senator] Sen. Larry Craig of Idaho was among several GOP [GOP=Grand

guilty plea to soliciting sex from an undercover male officer in a Minneapolis

- "'Madam's'
trial opens with Vitter on list: Attorney says senator
will invoke Fifth Amendment if questioned." ... "The woman accused of being
the "D.C. Madam" plans to call [Louisiana Republican Senator] Sen. David
Vitter, R-La. [Republican-Louisiana], as a defense witness, her attorney
said in court Monday as the high-profile racketeering and money-laundering
trial got under way." ... "Vitter's name is among those listed as potential
witnesses at the outset of the trial of Deborah Jeane Palfrey, 52, who
ran a $250-per-hour escort service that the government says was a front
for prostitution. Palfrey has said her business was a legitimate escort
service and her employees signed contracts stating that they would not
do anything illegal." ... "Vitter has not been charged. The senator's cell
phone number appears six times in the phone records of Palfrey's service,
Pamela Martin & Associates, between 1999 and 2001 when he was a member
of the House of Representatives." ... "His attorney asked U.S. [United
States] District Judge James Robertson last week to quash the subpoena,
saying that his client would refuse to answer questions citing his Fifth
Amendment right against self-incrimination, which would not help Palfrey's
case. Robertson refused to void the subpoena." ... ""I'd guess the Fifth
Amendment response would not play well at all, and would draw a response
of
'What has he got to hide?' from many people," said Michael Johnston, a
political scientist from Colgate University who has written about the public's
perception of corruption." ... "Palfrey's trial is expected to last up
to four weeks and feature testimony from 14 of the more than 100 escorts
who worked for Pamela Martin & Associates between 1993 and 2006. Given
immunity, they are expected to say that they performed sex acts for money
with Palfrey's knowledge and sent her half the proceeds from each encounter."

Secretary Alphonso Jackson steps down: The [Republican

in awarding federal housing contracts. His resignation takes effect April
18." ... "Housing and Urban Development Secretary Alphonso Jackson resigned
today amid a criminal investigation into favoritism in awarding HUD [Housing
and Urban Development] contracts that critics said was blunting the agency's
effectiveness in dealing with the subprime mortgage mess." ... "The investigation
into Jackson began in 2006, after he publicly disclosed that he had revoked
a contract because the vendor told him he did not like President Bush.
Amid an inspector general inquiry, Jackson told investigators that he had
misspoken." ... "The FBI [Federal Bureau of Investigation] is looking into
ties between Jackson and a friend who was paid $392,000 by HUD for work
as a construction manager in New Orleans [Louisiana] after Hurricane Katrina.
In addition, Jackson is also being sued for allegedly trying to punish
the Philadelphia [Pennsylvania] Housing Agency for nixing a deal with his

"The Supreme Court today turned down a government request to reverse a
lower court finding that an FBI [Federal Bureau of Investigation] raid
on [Louisiana Democratic Representative] Rep. William J. Jefferson's congressional
office violated the Constitution." ... "A panel of the U.S. [United States]

of printed materials and computer records violated the "speech or debate"
clause of the Constitution, which protects members of Congress from questioning
by members of the executive branch about their legislative work." ... "The
