"The
Federal Marriage Amendment is back — with Vitter’s and Craig’s support."
... "Republicans are looking at the political landscape, and they’re feeling
awfully discouraged. The polls look bad, the base looks depressed, and
fundraising looks iffy. Rallying the far-right troops with an anti-gay
amendment to the Constitution — even though it has no chance at even getting
so much as a hearing — might be helpful to the conservative movement."
... "But the funny part is looking over the list of the 10 original sponsors.
Most of the names are predictable — [Kansas Republican Senator Sam] Brownback
and [Oklahoma Republican Senator James] Inhofe, for example — but there
are two others whose names stand out: [Republican Senators] Sens. David
Vitter (R-La. [Republican-Louisiana]) and Larry Craig (R-Idaho [Republican])."
... "Yes, two of the principal sponsors of a constitutional amendment to
“protect” marriage include one far-right Republican who hired prostitutes
and another far-right Republican who was arrested for soliciting gay sex
an airport men’s room." ... "As
my
friend Kyle put it, these two are “not exactly the poster boys of the
family values crowd or particularly upstanding examples of the supposed
sanctity of the ‘union of a man and a woman.”‘" -By

asks court to block wider testing for mad cow." ...
"The [Republican President] Bush administration on Friday urged a federal
appeals court to stop meatpackers from testing all their animals for mad
cow disease, but a skeptical judge questioned whether the government has
that authority." ... "The government seeks to reverse a lower court ruling
that allowed Arkansas City, Kan.[Kansas]-based Creekstone Farms Premium
Beef to conduct more comprehensive testing to satisfy demand from overseas
customers in Japan and elsewhere." ... "Less than 1 percent of slaughtered
cows are currently tested for the disease under Agriculture Department
guidelines. The agency argues that more widespread testing does not guarantee
food safety and could result in a false positive that scares consumers."
... "Mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, can be fatal
to humans who eat tainted beef. Three cases of mad cow disease have been
discovered in the U.S. [United States] since 2003." -By

- "Republicans
Vote Against Moms; No Word Yet on Puppies, Kittens."
... "It was already shaping up to be a difficult year for congressional
Republicans. Now, on the cusp of Mother's Day, comes this: A majority of
the House GOP has voted against motherhood." ... "On Wednesday afternoon,
the House had just voted, 412 to 0, to pass H. Res. 1113, "Celebrating
the role of mothers in the United States and supporting the goals and ideals
of Mother's Day," when [Kansas Republican Representative] Rep. Todd Tiahrt
(R-Kan.), rose in protest." ... ""Mr. Speaker, I move to reconsider the
vote," he announced." ... "[Florida Democratic Representative] Rep. Kathy
Castor (D-Fla.), who has two young daughters, moved to table Tiahrt's request,
setting up a revote. This time, 178 Republicans cast their votes against
mothers." ... "It has long been the custom to compare a popular piece of
legislation to motherhood and apple pie. Evidently, that is no longer the
standard. Worse, Republicans are now confronted with a John Kerry-esque
predicament: They actually voted for motherhood before they voted against
it. " (1, 2)

- "Soldier
Sues Army, Saying His Atheism Led to Threats." ...
"When Specialist Jeremy Hall held a meeting last July for atheists and
freethinkers at Camp Speicher in Iraq, he was excited, he said, to see
an officer attending." ... "But minutes into the talk, the officer, [Major]
Maj. Freddy J. Welborn, began to berate Specialist Hall and another soldier
about atheism, Specialist Hall wrote in a sworn statement. “People like
you are not holding up the Constitution and are going against what the
founding fathers, who were Christians, wanted for America!” Major Welborn
said, according to the statement." ... "Major Welborn told the soldiers
he might bar them from re-enlistment and bring charges against them, according
to the statement." ... "Last month, Specialist Hall and the Military Religious
Freedom Foundation, an advocacy group, filed suit in federal court in Kansas,
alleging that Specialist Hall’s right to be free from state endorsement
of religion under the First Amendment had been violated and that he had
faced retaliation for his views. In November, he was sent home early from
Iraq because of threats from fellow soldiers." ... "Specialist Hall’s lawsuit
is the latest incident to raise questions about the military’s religion
guidelines. In 2005, the Air Force issued new regulations in response to
complaints from cadets at the Air Force Academy that evangelical Christian
officers used their positions to proselytize." ... "To Specialist Hall
and other critics of the military, the guidelines have done little to change
a culture they say tilts heavily toward evangelical Christianity. Controversies
have continued to flare, largely over tactics used by evangelicals to promote
their faith. Perhaps the most high-profile incident involved seven officers,
including four generals, who appeared, in uniform and in violation of military
regulations, in a 2006 fund-raising video for the Christian Embassy, an
evangelical Bible study group." (1, 2)

- 2008
Election - "McCain's
Role in Plane Pact Spotlights Ties to Lobbyists."
... "To show that he's a crusader against wasteful spending and congressional
corruption, [2008 Election Republican Presidential Candidate and Arizona
Senator] Sen. John McCain repeatedly brags about his leading role in stopping
a scandal-plagued air tanker contract between the Air Force and Boeing
in 2004." ... "Four years later, a $35 billion contract has been awarded
to Europe's Airbus consortium to build the latest generation of tanker
planes. The decision has sparked anger from Boeing's congressional supporters
and critics of outsourcing. It has also focused attention on McCain's reliance
on lobbyists in his campaign for president because his finance chairman
and several other top advisers lobbied for Airbus last year when it was
in fierce competition with Boeing for the Air Force contract." ... "McCain
has spoken out for years against the influence of special interests in
Washington, but his campaign includes a number of prominent Washington
lobbyists, including campaign manager Rick Davis, who founded a lobbying
firm, and top political adviser, Charles R. Black Jr., chief executive
of a well-known Washington firm. Neither of them lobbied for Airbus." ...
"McCain finance chairman Thomas G. Loeffler and Susan E. Nelson, who left
Loeffler's lobbying firm to be McCain's finance director, both began lobbying
for Airbus's parent company in 2007, Senate records show. William L. Ball
III, a former secretary of the Navy and frequent McCain surrogate on the
trail, also lobbied for Airbus, as did John Green, who recently took a
leave from Ogilvy Public Relations to serve as McCain's legislative liaison."
... "Democratic and Republican lawmakers in Washington state, where Boeing
has long had a significant presence, have lambasted McCain for laying the
groundwork for a decision that will cost their economy thousands of aerospace
jobs. Lawmakers in Kansas, where Boeing has a plant, have also been critical."

... "[2008 Election Republican Presidential Candidate] Mike Huckabee’s

dominant and never in doubt." ... "In swamping presumptive GOP [GOP=Grand
Old Party=Republican 2008 Election Presidential] nominee John McCain 11,627
to 4,587 votes, or 60 percent to 24 percent, Huckabee swept 104 of the
state’s 105 counties. In that final county, Trego in western Kansas, Huckabee
and McCain tied at 15 votes each." ... "The win gave Huckabee all 36 delegates
that were on the line for the GOP National Convention in Minneapolis [Minnesota]
this summer." ... "[2008 Election Republican Presidential Candidate and
Texas Republican Representative] Rep. Ron Paul of Texas wound up with 2,182
votes, or 11 percent." (1, 2)

his best night of the campaign." ... "The Democratic race moved into a
new, post-Super Tuesday phase as [2008 Election Republican Presidential
Candidate John] McCain flunked his first ballot test since becoming the
Republican nominee-in-waiting. He lost the Kansas caucuses to [2008 Election
Republican Presidential Candidate] Mike Huckabee, gaining less than 24
percent of the vote." ... "Huckabee also was named by NBC News as the apparent
winner of an extremely close Louisiana primary race." ... "His Kansas defeat
aside, McCain also suffered a symbolic defeat when Romney edged him out
in a straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference meeting
across town from the White House." (1, 2)

- "Head
of Rove Inquiry in Hot Seat Himself: Bloch Used Private
Company, Geeks on Call, to Delete Files On His Office Computer." ... "The
head of the federal agency investigating [Republican President Bush's former
aide] Karl Rove's White House political operation is facing allegations
that he improperly deleted computer files during another probe, using a
private computer-help company, Geeks on Call." ... "TScott Bloch runs the
Office of Special Counsel, an agency charged with protecting government
whistleblowers and enforcing a ban on federal employees engaging in partisan
political activity. Mr. Bloch's agency is looking into whether Mr. Rove
and other White House officials used government agencies to help re-elect
Republicans in 2006." ... "TAt the same time, Mr. Bloch has himself been
under investigation since 2005. At the direction of the White House, the
federal Office of Personnel Management's inspector general is looking into
claims that Mr. Bloch improperly retaliated against employees and dismissed
whistleblower cases without adequate examination." ... "TRecently, investigators
learned that Mr. Bloch erased all the files on his office personal computer
late last year. They are now trying to determine whether the deletions
were improper or part of a cover-up, lawyers close to the case said." ...
"In an interview, the 49-year-old former labor-law litigator from Lawrence,
Kan., confirmed that he contacted Geeks on Call but said he was trying
to eradicate a virus that had seized control of his computer." ... "Mr.
Bloch believes the White House may have a conflict of interest in pressing
the inquiry into his conduct while his office investigates the White House
political operation." ... "Depending on circumstances, erasing files or
destroying evidence in a federal investigation can be considered obstruction
of justice." ... "Mr. Bloch had his computer's hard disk completely cleansed
using a "seven-level" wipe: a thorough scrubbing that conforms to Defense
Department data-security standards. The process makes it nearly impossible
for forensics experts to restore the data later. He also directed Geeks
on Call to erase laptop computers that had been used by his two top political
deputies, who had recently left the agency." -By John

- "At
an Army School for Officers, Blunt Talk About Iraq."
... "Here at the intellectual center of the United States Army [Fort Leavenworth,
Kansas], two elite officers were deep in debate at lunch on a recent day
over who bore more responsibility for mistakes in Iraq — the [Republican
President Bush's] former defense secretary, Donald H. Rumsfeld, or the
generals who acquiesced to him." ... "“The secretary of defense is an easy
target,” argued one of the officers, Maj. [Major] Kareem P. Montague, 34,
a Harvard graduate and a commander in the Third Infantry Division, which
was the first to reach Baghdad [Iraq's capital] in the 2003 invasion. “It’s
easy to pick on the political appointee.”" ... "“But he’s the one that’s
responsible,” retorted Maj. [Major] Michael J. Zinno, 40, a military planner
who worked at the headquarters of the Coalition Provisional Authority,
the former American civilian administration in Iraq." ... "No, Major Montague
shot back, it was more complicated: the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the top
commanders were part of the decision to send in a small invasion force
and not enough troops for the occupation. Only Gen. [General] Eric K. Shinseki,
the Army chief of staff who was sidelined after he told Congress that it
would take several hundred thousand troops in Iraq, spoke up in public."
... "“You didn’t hear any of them at the time, other than General Shinseki,
screaming, saying that this was untenable,” Major Montague said." ... "Much
of the debate at Leavenworth has centered on a scathing article, “A Failure
in Generalship,” written last May for Armed Forces Journal by Lt. Col.
[Lieutenant Colonel] Paul Yingling, an Iraq veteran and deputy commander
of the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment who holds a master’s degree in political
science from the University of Chicago [Illinois]. “If the general remains
silent while the statesman commits a nation to war with insufficient means,
he shares culpability for the results,” Colonel Yingling wrote." -By
