"Señor
Smith: Low-wage Latino workers keep [Oregon Republican
Senator] Sen. Gordon Smith’s family business humming. Not all of them are
legal." ... "Up on a hill overlooking this Eastern Oregon town of 701 people,
Smith Frozen Foods turns raw produce from the surrounding fields into ready-to-eat
products." ... "Smith’s goods appear in grocery stores under other brand
names. But in tiny Weston [Oregon], a water tank emblazoned with the capital
letters S-M-I-T-H sits like a sentry greeting travelers on nearby Highway
11." ... "Gordon Smith, a United States senator from Oregon and the only
Republican senator representing a West Coast state, has owned the plant
his grandfather founded in 1919 for nearly 30 years." ... "“Son,” father
Milan Smith once said, according to Gordon Smith’s 2006 memoir, “you can
sell ice to Eskimos and coals to Newcastle.”" ... "Today, Smith Frozen
Foods generates millions in income for the senator, according to Smith’s
2007 financial disclosure report." ... "And in this town, Smith’s wealth
looms large, even though the 56-year-old lawmaker seldom visits and calls
nearby Pendleton [Oregon] his home. According to the Center for Responsive
Politics, Smith is the 12th-richest member of the U.S. [United States]
Senate, with an estimated net worth between $8 million and $39 million—wealth
that’s allowed him to buy a $3.5 million mansion in Bethesda, Md. [Maryland],
property on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, a Park City, Utah, condominium
and—more famously—four antique golf clubs worth $1.25 million." ... "The
workers at Smith Frozen Foods, who clean the machinery, monitor production
and pack upward of 50 million pounds of produce each year, earn about $80
a day, four or five days a week, 10 months a year—if they’re lucky." ...
"One other thing—some of them appear to be illegal immigrants." ... "WW
recently spent several days in Weston, and the nearby cities of Milton-Freewater
[Oregon] and Walla Walla, Wash. [Washington], where most of Smith’s employees
live. WW spoke to dozens of current and former Smith workers, Latino advocates,
court personnel, public defenders, educators, police administrators, church
officials, social service agents and business owners and determined that
some portion of Smith’s workforce comprises undocumented immigrants." ...
"It’s a revelation that may not be newsworthy around Weston, where most
people this reporter interviewed knew, or assumed, that the agricultural
processing plant hired illegal immigrants." ... "Additional interviews
and review of public records reveal that Smith’s company appears to have
employed illegal immigrants for decades, stretching back as far as the
1980s." -By Beth

"Akaka
defends Obama's Hawaii vacation from ABC commentator:
Journalist questions [2008 Election Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack]
Obama's vacation in 'foreign' destination." ... "A group called Asian Americans
for Obama sent out a media alert yesterday with the headline, "BREAKING:
Hawai'i is a State," as U.S. [Unisted States Hawaii Democratic Senator]
Sen. Daniel Akaka and others defended U.S. [Illinois Democratic Senator]
Sen. Barack Obama's decision to spend a weeklong vacation in the Islands."
... "Obama had another casual day yesterday: Visit his grandmother at her
Makiki apartment again, watch a movie at the Ward Complex theaters and
go to dinner. But his choice of vacation destinations — his hometown of
Honolulu — prompted [Disney TV's] ABC News' Cokie Roberts to twice call
Hawai'i a "foreign" and "exotic" vacation destination for the man who wants
to be president." ... ""I know his grandmother lives in Hawai'i," Roberts
said on ABC's This Week with George Stephanopoulos. "And I know Hawai'i
is a state. But it has the look of him going off to some sort of foreign,
exotic place. He should be in Myrtle Beach if he's going to take a vacation
at this time."" ... "But Akaka didn't see any humor in Roberts' comments."
... ""Saying our 50th state is somehow 'foreign,' does a great disservice
to the hardworking, patriotic Americans who call Hawai'i home," Akaka said.
"For months, people have been asking me, 'When is Sen. Obama going to come
home?' I'm so glad he found time to visit his sister and his grandmother,
and for him and his family to bond and recharge in his home state. Hawai'i
is a great U.S. destination; just ask the 5.5 million Americans who visited
last year for business and pleasure."" ... "Akaka's press secretary, Jesse
Broder Van Dyke, wants Roberts to see firsthand evidence of Hawai'i's history
and its role in the country's future." ... ""I would love to take Ms. Roberts
on a tour of O'ahu, with stops at the Arizona Memorial and Punchbowl, followed
by a visit with Hawai'i Army National Guard soldiers training for their
second deployment to the Middle East," he said. "Then I would take her
to Eastside Grill to watch Team USA women's volleyball and Bryan Clay.
I would introduce her to Hawai'i residents so she could witness our diversity
and learn about the aloha spirit. Part of what makes America great is the
unique contributions of all 50 states. Sen. Obama has every right to come
home and visit his sister and grandmother."" -By Dan

Contractor Gave Lawmaker Perks." ... "[Former California
Republican Representative Randy "Duke"] Cunningham, a San Diego Republican
who held seats on the powerful House intelligence and defense appropriations
committees, was elected to eight terms before resigning in 2005. He pleaded
guilty that year to accepting $2.4 million in bribes from [Brent] Wilkes
and others and is serving an eight-year prison sentence." ... "[Wilkes
nephew and employee Joel] Combs testified Wednesday that his uncle communicated
with other prominent lawmakers, including California Republicans Jerry
Lewis and Duncan Hunter, former House Majority Leader [Republican] Tom
DeLay of Texas, Republican Whip [Missouri Representative] Roy Blunt, and
Sen. Daniel Inouye, a Hawaii Democrat." ... "But the relationship with
Cunningham was at the center of Wilkes' success in Washington, and Combs
said his uncle worked to keep the lawmaker happy - efforts that included
staking his nephew money to purposely lose in poker games with the lawmaker."
... "Combs recalled dinners at Washington's fancy Capital Grille restaurant,
shooting lessons, and trips to Florida, Las Vegas [Nevada] and Idaho provided
by Wilkes for the congressman from 1998 until 2002. During that period,
Cunningham made calls to Pentagon officials on Wilkes' behalf and helped
secure about $90 million in federal contracts for Wilkes' company." ...
"The perks included a $20,000 stay in a private villa at a resort in Hawaii,
where Wilkes, Combs and the congressman went diving - an expedition captured
in an underwater video that was played for jurors. Combs said he also hired
women from an escort service for his uncle and the congressman." ... "Wilkes
also paid to fly Cunningham and former House Speaker [Illinois Republican
Representative] Dennis Hastert from a golf outing in Palm Springs [California]
to San Diego [California] for a reception and then back to Washington on
private jets, Combs testified." -By Allison Hoffman

testify in Ca. bribery trial." ... "A prostitute
whom prosecutors say a defense contractor provided to former Rep. [California

that the congressman fed her grapes as she sat naked in a hot tub before
they headed to a bedroom at a Hawaiian resort." ... "The woman spoke at
the trial of Brent Wilkes, who is accused bribing Cunningham with $700,000
in cash and perks in exchange for help securing about $90 million in government
contracts. Wilkes has denied the charges." ... "Donna Rosetta said she
was chauffeured to a private villa at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel in
Kamelua, Hawaii, in August 2003 by an escort service she worked for. Cunningham
and Wilkes invited her and a second woman to undress and slide into a hot
tub before Cunningham invited her upstairs, Rosetta said." ... ""They were
smoking cigars and talking about some meeting they had earlier," Rosetta
said." ... "She and Cunningham went to a bedroom, and he tipped her $50
to $80, she said." ... "The other woman, Tammy McFadden, testified that
Wilkes and Cunningham appeared to be arguing about who would go upstairs
with which woman." ... ""The one I ended up with was the one who was running
the show," said McFadden, referring to Wilkes. She described Cunningham
as "the boisterous one" and said he was overbearing." -By

are calling for a boost in funding for the Consumer Product Safety Commission

charged with protecting consumers “has been neglected and underfunded for
years.”" ... "Lawmakers and witnesses criticized the state of the Consumer
Product Safety Commission (CPSC), detailing budget and staff cuts that
have come as imports have increased drastically. The concerns went beyond
[Republican President Bush] White House budget decisions to the agency’s
leadership." ... "“I would like to see people at that agency take a much
more aggressive view of protecting consumers, and I have been disappointed,”
Durbin said after the hearing." ... "[Arkansas Democratic Senator] Mark
